Back In The Union
By 1870, all blacks were free and all of the southern states rejoined the Union. Black citizens joined the Republican party. In Mississippi, two black citizens were elected as senators. However, most offices were held by white Republicans, who were called scalawags. Sharecropping often occured in the South, when freed slaves would work on plantations in exchange for food, land, and shelter.
